CWRT is to use the Parenting Fund grant to employ a worker to support the mothers who come to the refuge during their stay and also for a short time after they move on. The project offers support and advice on parenting to women who come to the refuge. Their concerns include:
- Lack of confidence in their own ability to parent as a result of experiencing domestic abuse
- Support in dealing with behaviour their children can exhibit following exposure to abuse and violence
- Lack of experience in dealing with outside agencies e.g. new school, social services
- Stress and upset can cause conflict between children and mothers living in a refuge
- Changing approach to discipline as the CWRT refuge has a no-smacking policy
- Upon leaving the refuge mothers are often anxious about their parenting outside the supportive refuge environment
Mums who have not brought their children with them for whatever reason would also be entitled to this support. The above issues and others are examined through mums and the parent support worker working together. Issues will be identified through holistic needs assessment and worked through by the action plans. The parent support worker will also advocate on mother's behalf with outside agencies if requested.
