Our project is providing courses for the parents and carers of children with dyslexia. Our plan is to:
- Hold 37 courses over 2 years
- Target harder to reach parents/carers, such as those from low-income backgrounds, those facing material deprivation, fathers and single parents
- Inform parents/carers of children with dyslexia/learning difficulties so they are better able to help and support their children
- Improve parents'/carers' understanding of dyslexia, particularly in some less recognised aspects, such as: poor short-term memory; poor organisational skills; difficulty with numbers etc
- Enable parents/carers to learn the skills needed to help improve their child's literacy and numeracy, for example using a structure multi-sensory approach
- Provide a forum for parents/carers to talk about their concerns and discuss them with others in a similar position. This will foster the setting up of self-help parent/carer support groups
- Highlight issues of low self-esteem, emotional and behaviour difficulties, common in children with dyslexia, and discuss ways of tackling them
- Promote good relationships between parents and schools
- Provide resources for parents/carers to use with their child
- Encourage parents/carers understand the way the LEA operates its support for children with Special Educational Needs
- Encourage single fathers with dyslexic child/children to come together and support each other
The workshops are interactive and adapted to meet the varying needs of parents/carers.
