We are working across Cornwall with families who have children (aged 0-19) with any kind of disability or long term medical condition. We expect to provide short term support to parents of disabled children who need information and advice to care for their children but are unable to seek or find it. This includes parents who have low literacy or social skills and/or those who have been unable to access help from statutory sources. Some parents may be frustrated or angry and disillusioned, some live in socially isolated areas and some are floundering with no support having been overwhelmed by the maze of services.
Our workers help parents identify their difficulties and possible solutions and may negotiate with local services on their behalf. By improving communication between the family and services we will enable parents to develop negotiation skills and self advocate and thus be able to handle future difficulties with more confidence.
In this project we are working closely with the local Scope Parent to Parent befriending scheme. Parents may self refer or be referred by local professionals.
