We are using our Round 2 grant to build on the findings of our Round 1 Parenting Project in the following ways:
- Continued delivery of Parenting Skills workshops, specific to the needs of the parents with drug/alcohol problems, within Broadreach House residential and Aftercare services
- To offer individually tailored support packages to parents through all stages of treatment. This may include practical and emotional support, facilitation of access visits, skills development etc
- To focus on the needs of teenage children of drug/alcohol using parents, many of who are already misusing substances, resulting in physical and emotional damage and high risk of becoming young parents
- To integrate established parenting work with family therapy, focusing on the relationships of couples who are parents, and on extended families affected by drug/alcohol use
- To focus on the needs of men, many of whom have been absent fathers during their substance use but who wish to reintegrate with their families
- To extend existing services to reach a wider geographical area, and develop infrastructures with Cornwall. Existing projects in Cornwall include support groups for hard to reach parents with children at risk of drug/alcohol abuse, and support for parents in recovery from their own dependencies.
Shared resources would strengthen projects currently working in isolation and allow continued development of a common core of skills and knowledge. We are currently disseminating our own findings and exploring opportunities for joint working to meet existing needs in less well served areas.
