Our aim is to maximise the potential of children who have conditions affecting their social, sensory, communication, motor and learning abilities. Using the Parenting Fund grant we will provide support for the parents of these children in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Birmingham. Our programme will:
- Undertake first assessments and reassessments using an inter-disciplinary measure of the medical, educational and social aspects of the child's development
- Teach parents/carers (average 2 per child) intervention plans, practical coping strategies and parenting techniques, to be performed at home
- Empower parents to be partners with other professionals associated with the child
- Provide 8 parenting classes over two years for parents already attending Parentline Plus courses. These will offer skills, strategies and techniques that will help them work with their child's behaviour, understand the impact of nutrition on behaviour and provide practical techniques. Parents will be provided with a pack of activities and suggestions for use at home or at school.
- Collaborate with Birmingham Down's Syndrome Support Network to improve parents' access to local support locally.
