We want to develop a range of services that support parents living with HIV in caring for their children. Included are: support groups, parenting sessions, volunteer befriending and outreach work. In working alongside parents with HIV we want to help them address factors, such as stigma, isolation, bereavement, ill health and asylum seeking, that can impair their confidence and skills as carers. Using peer support networks we expect to share knowledge and information, increase skills and self esteem and foster enable parents to enjoy family life with their children. Our programme is being will delivered in partnership between George House Trust. Service users will have their specialist HIV needs met by George House Trust and their child care needs addressed by Barnardo's.
Beneficiaries: The project will benefit 130 Manchester parents and 200 children who are living with or affected by HIV. Referrals to the service are rising significantly; nevertheless both agencies will promote their services widely throughout the voluntary and statutory sector to ensure that the availability of parenting support reaches the widest audience.
