Camden Women's Aid is a charity founded in 1974. We provide refuge accommodation, support, a legal service, advice and a children's service for young survivors of domestic violence.
Using the grant from the Parenting Fund we will pilot a parenting programme jointly developed by parenting workers and service users. We will then assess the programme and write up our findings to provide a model of best practice in this field.
The programme aims to reduce the long-term impact of domestic violence on the family by helping the parent to manage her children's distress and achieve resettlement. In addition to introducing parenting techniques, the project will help mothers/carers to understand and respond effectively to their children's behaviour. The project will also work with mothers who have difficulty in bonding with their children following domestic violence.
For the funded project Camden Women's Aid will:
- run workshops on domestic violence and parenting
- hold specialist one day events on relevant topics (e.g. older children with challenging behaviour)
- hold regular drop in help sessions to deal with urgent issues
- work with individual families where the parent and worker identify this need.
The programme will be made available to current refuge service users, outreach service users and we will accept referrals from individuals and other agencies in the Greater London area.
