We are using the Parenting Fund grant to provide Parenting Education and Support to young mothers aged 13-30. The project will target 'hard to reach' groups such as Teenage mums, BME mums, women with mental health problems and women with disabilities. It also includes those who have had a deprived and unhappy upbringing or suffered abuse, violence, discrimination, school exclusion or have low educational attainment.
We want our support to help them understand their own social, emotional, psychological and physical needs and those of their children. It will build their self-confidence and develop skills that will help them in the nurturing, care and upbringing of their children.
We expect to achieve this through a combination of 'drop in' services, group work, family learning workshops and personal development programmes that provide:
- opportunities for young women to build and develop their parenting skills
- materials and resources on parenting
- opportunities for parent and child interaction
- information about and access to appropriate health care professionals
- discussions that share experiences as a way of developing skills and knowledge
- a response to individuals' development needs
- talks and trips out aimed at developing skills and knowledge
- accredited course work.
We hope that this work will lead to replicable service models that can be taken up by other agencies supporting young disadvantaged mothers.
