The Yorkshire Band of Hope Union is a Leeds based children's alcohol and drugs charity. We focus on prevention and encourage children and young people to consider alcohol and drug free options. We were established in 1865.
Many parents and carers are concerned about the harmful use of alcohol and other drugs and need help, information and support. We are using the Parenting Fund grant to develop a course that informs parents about drug use and involves them in its prevention.
Called 'How to Drug Proof Your Kids' it is designed to help parents:
- become better informed about drug use and the harm that can follow
- develop strategies to help their children make informed choices about drug use
- spend time examining their own beliefs and attitudes to drug use
- get hold of information and support.
The primary aim of the course is prevention and it covers:
- drugs! Just how bad is it?
- why children and young people take drugs
- how to educate children to make good choices
- prevention tools for parents
- learning to intervene and where to get help
- a parent's guide to handling relapses.
The course is provided in a safe and comfortable environment where parents can offer mutual support and share experiences and ideas. There are six two-hour sessions, which can be organised during evenings or at weekends. It is accompanied by a parents' pack and is open to others, such as grandparents or professionals and volunteers, who look after children.
