Founded in 1994, The Place2Be (P2B) is a registered charity providing therapeutic and emotional support to children in primary schools. We work with 'the whole child' - namely the child themselves, the child at school and the child at home.
Using the Parenting Fund, we will roll-out 'A Place for Parents', a model successfully piloted over the last year. It supports the development of parenting skills by offering parents a space where they can work with an experienced professional to explore and express their thoughts and feelings about themselves and their children. Outcomes should be a greater self-awareness, confidence and resilience among parents. This will help parents to be more at ease in their parenting role and better able to address gaps in how they relate to their children. It also encourages parents and children to work more effectively together. Issues typically addressed include bereavement, self-confidence, being a good enough parent, communication, challenging behaviours of children, mental health, substance misuse, living with conflict and moving on from domestic violence.
A 'Place for Parents' will offer one to one and group support to parents of children in the schools where The Place2Be works. Using this experience we will develop a further programme for professionals working with parents to add to P2B's current range of accredited training programmes.
Feedback from parents using the pilot scheme has highlighted its effectiveness:
"I am able to talk to the children and my new partner. I can deal with conflict and relationships much better. I can say what I like in A Place for Parents and not get judged. It has given me the confidence to go outside and speak my mind because I had the chance to work things out here."
