This project is part of Hartcliffe and Withywood Ventures, (HWV), a charity set up in 1985 to help local people into jobs, training, further education and employment. We are using the Parenting Fund grant to set up a parenting programme called 'Knowing Me, Knowing My Child' and to extend our parent support work into a larger area.
'Knowing Me, Knowing My Child' is a 10-week course accessible to all levels of literacy. Working in partnership with local schools we will target parents who are facing difficult challenges e.g. where there are children at risk of exclusion from school or parents who find setting boundaries for young people difficult. Taster courses such as 'First Aid for your child' and 'Basic plumbing' will be offered to interest people in the parenting course. It covers:
- building confidence & self esteem.
- effective communication and negotiating
- anti bullying and harassment
- positive and negative impacts of assumptions about our children and ourselves
- identifying children's needs
- 'All Different all Equal' taster session
- personal choice and consequence
- valuing your education and relationship building.
At the end, there will be an individual tutorial session offering advice and guidance on what to do next. It covers education, personal development and jobs.
By recruiting a parent support worker we will extend our support to parents of young disabled people seeking an inclusive mainstream education for their children to a neighbouring area. A network of support volunteers will be set up and support provided for parents in their meetings with schools or in making contributions to statements of Special Educational Need.
