The nia project is a domestic violence organisation working for the safety of women and children across London. We provide safe temporary housing, legal support and advice to women, children and young people who are survivors of domestic and community violence. We are a charity set up in 1975.
We are using the Parenting Fund grant to develop our family support service by appointing two part-time Parenting Support Workers (1 Turkish and 1 Vietnamese-speaking). They will develop parenting skills programmes for women from BMER (Black Minority Ethnic and Refugee) backgrounds who have been affected by domestic violence. Our initial focus will be on the Turkish and Vietnamese communities.
The Parenting Support programmes will:
- increase awareness and understanding ofthe impact of domestic violence on parenting capacity and the well-being of children and young people
- increase awareness of the relationship between domestic violence and child development and child protection
- explore the impact of cross-cultural parenting/discrimination and racism on the ability of women from BMER communities to parent
- empower BMER women to develop positive parenting strategies using the Racial Equality Units (REU) 'Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities' parenting programme
- enable BMER service users to take the REU facilitator course so that it can be rolled out to other Women's Aid and community projects
- provide mentoring to service user volunteers to encourage their development as parenting skills facilitators.
