Set up in 1991, The Laura Centre is a local Leicester based charity that provides therapeutic support to anyone affected by the death of a child and children affected by the death of a parent or carer.
Using the Parenting Fund grant we are able to extend our work with bereaved parents and allow for some development work with hard to reach groups. Two part-time counselling posts have been created with a remit to run more groups for parents, both for their own support and to address parenting issues with bereaved children. This funding will enable us to do more individual work with parents whose children have been affected by the death of a parent (i.e. whose partner or ex-partner has died). In addition to therapeutic work, the post-holders will undertake some development work with ethnic minority and disabled groups - to promote awareness and understanding about our service and bereavement issues.
There will be greater access to the service because the new counsellors will be able to travel to meet people in the Leicester area who cannot come to the centre. In addition to direct work with bereaved parents, some training and support work for professionals will be undertaken.
