Established in 1881, The Children's Society is a charity dedicated to helping children get a decent chance in life by providing care and support for children promoting their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development.
We have conducted research showing that running away peaks around the ages of 15 and 16. Many 'runaways' give a high level of conflict at home as the reason for leaving. We are using our Parenting Fund grant to implement a national programme aimed at better equipping parents to deal with this family crisis.
Two Parenting Officers will be attached to Children's Society runaway projects in the South West and North West of England. They will respond to the challenges individual parents face and create greater awareness of the extent of the problem and how to address it by:
- establishing parental need
- mapping services for parents whose children run away
- identify gaps in provision and help others develop local services
- help other services to enable parents to access provision.
