The Asian Health Agency (TAHA) manages fifteen health, social care and capacity building projects across London and South East England. In Slough our Parveez project provides a range of support services to Asian families that have children with disabilities. TAHA is a charity set up in 1994.
We are using the parenting Fund grant in Slough to target Asian parents looking after children with disabilities and their siblings and we will provide:
- "Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities" Parenting Programmes targeted at Asian parents. It will conform to the nationally accredited parenting programme offered by the REU (formerly the Race Equality Unit). It focuses on developing parenting skills and preventing crises
- one to one confidential counselling sessions for Asian mothers run by trained Asian women counsellors
- development of a Parents' Support group and a Sibling's Support group
- information sessions on the services provided by the Local Authority, PCT, Children's Education and Parental Support etc.
- Outreach support consisting of home visiting and individual family support. It will ensure that parents are aware of their entitlement to welfare benefits and services. The service will also support them in overcoming the barriers and discrimination they may face in gaining access to services.
