Established in 1867, Spurgeon's Child Care is a Christian based charity working in England, Scotland and Wales to deliver preventative child care services in partnership with others. We set up Beyond the Horizon in 2003 to cover a gap in children's bereavement services across Birmingham. The Parenting Fund is being used to fund a Parenting Worker who will offer support to parents alongside the service already being provided to children.
The Parenting Fund project will:
- provide a support package to parents of bereaved children. It will help them to support their children and understand what they are going through
- provide information and resources to parents and professionals on bereavement
- raise awareness of the needs of bereaved children among other agencies working with children and parents
- develop support groups for parents following bereavement. These will provide mutual longer term support for parents
- train volunteers to work with the parents of bereaved children.
Our service will be provided in accessible community settings across Birmingham. We are working with Edwards Trust, Sunrise (a well-established bereavement support agency), Beyond the Horizon (supported by Birmingham Diocese) and Beaconbridge (an adult counselling service). The work will be widely promoted through our links with health, education, social care and the voluntary sector.
