Title Support for a young widowed mother
Funding round 2
S. is a Kurdish widow who lost her husband a couple of years ago because wrong medication. Being only in her early 20s, just having had a baby and losing her husband in such a way, have all been very traumatic for her. Her daughter is 4 years old now and S. is still struggling as a single mother. She was blaming herself for not being a good enough parent for her child because of the grief she was still going through. She was refered to us by one of Derman's health advocates.
She describes her child to be very bright but has concerns about being a single mother. She also was not sure how to answer some of her daughter's questions about her dad. She joined our parenting groups and soon became more sociable with the other parents. She also came on our trip with her daughter and developed good friendships with the other members of the group. This is how she feels about her experience of Derman's parenting group:
"...I was an unbearable person before I joined this groups. The meetings not only helped me in looking after my child better but also on how to talk to her etc but they also helped me to to learn and discover more about mysel. It improved my confidence....I wish the group could have lasted longer and some group work with children also could also be done. ...Also , I really enjoyed taking part in the countryside trips, it would be good to do them more frequently."
Shortly after starting our parenting groups, she was referred to Derman's counselling service where she works on her breavement which will also help with her parenting.
