Title Feelgood stories from young mums who've been helped
Funding round 2
Before Shanelle was offered a house in Wythenshawe she was living in a homeless unit for young mums and children. She had no knowledge of the area, with no family or friends living there, she was unaware of any support agencies available to help her and so became isolated within her own home. After finding a leaflet that I had posted through her door, she rang me and explained that she was very nervous about living in Wythenshawe and that she feared racial harassment as she and her son were mixed race.
The first workshop she attended was a big step for her, although she only lived minutes away from the venue, she came in a taxi as she was worried about walking through Wythenshawe to get there. After attending the first couple of workshops, Shanelle had became friends with most of the other girls and found out that one of them lived on her road. She is now engaging with her local SureStart and various mother and baby groups in the area. After chatting with one of the other mums on the project who is working and has a knowledge of working family tax credits, Shanelle is now looking for part-time work. She went for an interview at the RAC call centre in May, and although she didn't get that job, she actively continued looking for work. Shannelle attended another interview at the beginning of August 07 at LBM Direct Marketing, Altrincham and is now working there full time.
