Title Provision of service for a deaf mother
Funding round 2
Lisa was a young woman who was profoundly deaf. She was feeling extremely isolated and lonely. She had tried to access a playgroup for her daughter but without a friend to go with and with communication being so difficult, she was reluctant to go back.
Sharon, our volunteer, was proficient in signing and was anxious to practise her skills. Sharon was introduced to Lisa and they hit it off immediately. Sharon was able to accompany Lisa to playgroup for her daughter's benefit. As importantly, Sharon also encouraged her and then sat with her through confidence building courses and adult literacy classes. Lisa was so happy to be able to go out with a friend and do normal things like shopping for her holidays etc. She flourished and her depression lifted. It was a wonderful occasion for both Sharon and Lisa when Lisa won an award for Student of the Year. She had come so far with Sharon's friendship and encouragement.
Parenting Fund money has helped so many families. It has been hard to pick out just one case study, but we think this gives a flavour of the families that so benefit from parental support delivered in a friendly non judgemental way. Once again a huge thank you – we were able to make a difference.
